The magic of baking soda

Baking soda is one of those products that everyone has in their home – or should have, for that matter. You’ll find baking soda enhanced products like dish detergent, laundry detergent, toothpaste, etc., but there are so many ways to use just your basic, generic baking soda at home to help you save money. Not to mention, in some cases it could be a better alternative to buying expensive household products. Essentially, baking soda is AMAZING and here are some ways to utilize that box lying around somewhere in your kitchen:

PERSONAL CARE

  • Freshen your mouth. Put one tsp in half a glass of water and use as a mouthwash — swish, spit, rinse. Odors are neutralized by the baking soda, not just covered up!
  • Treat insect bites and itchy skin. For insect bites, make a paste of baking soda and water and apply to bite. For itchy skin, shake baking soda onto your hand and rub into damp skin after bathing.
  • Soothe your feet. Dissolve 3 tablespoons of baking soda in a tub of warm water and soak/scrub your feet!

CLEANING

  • Make a surface soft scrub. For easy surface cleaning of your tub, tile, sinks, countertops, etc., sprinkle baking soda onto a clean, damp sponge. Scrub, rinse and wipe dry. For tough cleans, make a paste with baking soda, salt and liquid dish soap and let it sit before wiping/scrubbing it off. (I’ve actually used this scrub — not with the salt, but with water — on my stovetop and it is AMAZING. Got out the toughest buildup. I also used a toothbrush to help the process.)
  • Polish silver flatware. Make a baking soda paste: 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Rub onto the silver with a clean cloth or sponge, rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Remove marks on walls and furniture by applying baking soda to a damp sponge and rubbing lightly. Wipe off with a clean, dry cloth. (Who needs magic erasers?)

DEODORIZING

  • Deodorize your cutting board. How many times have you been left with a smelly cutting board after cutting onions? Sprinkle the board with baking soda, scrub and rinse.
  • Deodorize drains. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain while running warm water. It neutralized acid and basic odors for a fresh drain!
  • Freshen your linens. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle for fresher sheets and towels! So easy.

MORE AMAZING STUFF

  • Going camping? No problem! Baking soda can be used as a dish waster, pot scrubber, hand cleanser, deodorant, toothpaste and fire extinguisher — just to name a few.
  • Extinguish kitchen fires! When baking soda is heated, it gives off carbon dioxide, which helps smother flames. Throw some handfuls of baking soda at the flames to help put out the fire.
  • Fruit and veggie scrub. Sprinkle a little baking soda on a clean, damp sponge, scrub and rinse to clean dirt and residue off your produce.

These are just a few of the many uses for baking soda! View the full list at Care2.com.

It's time for gingerbread!

It”s December, and that means it”s time to take those gingerbread recipes out of the holiday cookbooks .. you know, the ones shoved in the far back corner of your bookshelf. I love gingerbread, so when wintertime is finally showing its shining face, I like to embrace the season as much as possible. Gingerbread everything, please!

GINGERBREAD HOUSES

As much as I love gingerbread, making houses can be a huge pain. While they”re a warp back to childhood, it can be frustrating all the same. However, instead of buying one of those kits this year, you should try making one from scratch. With so many templates and recipes online, you”ll be a gingerbread house making pro in no time!

GINGERBREAD MONKEY BREAD

Okay, I know what you”re thinking. “Gingerbread and monkey bread are amazing on their own, what a genius idea to add them together!” I know. I feel the same. Plus, the gingerbread men marshmallows are too cute for words. (Tablespoon.com)

CLASSIC GINGERBREAD CAKE

This cake is delicious on it”s own, or even with a nice, hearty frosting. I”m thinking cream cheese. YUM. A perfect snack to go along with some warm cider — morning, afternoon or night. (browneyedbaker.com)

If you”re a lover of chocolate and cake, then today is the day for you. On behalf of Social Grocery, I wish you a very Happy National Chocolate Cupcake Day (not to be confused with National Cupcake Day on December 15th)!

In celebration of this delicious day — and in addition to my love of obscure holidays — I have decided to share a few treats to help get your OM NOM NOM on. And no, they”re not your basic out-of-the-box chocolate cupcakes:

TRIPLE CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES

Triple Chocolate Cupcakes

This is what I would like to call a CHOCOLATE EXPLOSION. These devil”s food chocolate cupcakes from Annie”s Eats are filled with chocolate ganache, then topped with chocolate sour cream frosting and chocolate curls. Not only are these gorgeous, they”re bursting with chocolate-induced happiness. Please do yourself a favor and make them ASAP. Perfect for National Chocolate Cupcake Day!

CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE POPS

Chocolate Cupcake Pops

As a huge Bakerella fan, I obviously had to include her Chocolate Cupcake Pops in this post. Take a different spin on the traditional chocolate cupcake — shrink it, dip it, decorate it and put it on a stick instead. If you haven”t tried cupcake pops or cake pops yet, use National Chocolate Cupcake Day as an excuse to educate yourself. You won”t be disappointed!

CHOCOLATE ROSE TUTORIAL (CAKE/CUPCAKE TOPPER)

Chocolate Rose Cake/Cupcake Topper

Tell me you”ve never seen gourmet cupcakes with elaborate flower toppings and thought “hey, I want to learn how to do that!” Well, luckily for us, Cakebrain from Cake on The Brain blog has an excellent tutorial on how to create these chocolate roses, perfect to add a little touch of beauty to your National Chocolate Cupcake Day creations. And according to Cakebrain herself,  they”re easier to make than we think!
